Bridge across a creek which would displace tidal wetlands, but replace them nearby

Location

King and Queen County, Virginia

Situation

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission did not want to issue the permit to build the bridge.

Problem

Wetland retention. In VMRC’s experience, 80% of all created wetlands fail.

Benefit

Grattan Associates designed a creative plan to replace the wetlands after the bridge was built. The permit was issued, and by the next growing season, the replanted area was fully vegetated. VMRC was so pleased with the results, the Commission asked Grattan to design Virginia’s first “tidal wetlands mitigation bank.”
