History

Armed with an engineering degree from Virginia Tech and almost a decade of on-the-job experience at a local firm, Stuart Grattan founded his own firm in 1992. Today, Grattan Associates offers a full range of civil engineering services, with a concentration on design and a constant focus on ecological impact.

While plans and permits originate in the office, the engineering team does much of its work in the field. Grattan Associates is known for its creativity and problem-solving skills, and clients say they especially appreciate the individual attention this small, flexible firm is able to provide.

Project	Addition to an existing mini storage facility
Location	Near Lynchburg, Virginia
Situation	A storm sewer ran off onto a nearby develop ment, though the pipe had been in place since the 1970s, before the development was built.
Problem	Slow approval process. While recognizing the pipe was a prior condition, the County wanted the drainage issue resolved before it would approve plans for the mini storage expansion.
Benefit	Grattan Associates came up with a “neighborly solution” by adjusting the drainage run-off— thereby hastening the building approval process.
